いろいろ意味はありますが、下の文脈は、「＜新しい話題や事柄など＞に移る、し始める」という意味で使われています。

Probloggerという、ブロガーに役立つ情報を集めたサイトのエントリー '9 Benefits of Twitter for Bloggers'から。

'I was a little slow getting onto Twitter last year (when so many other bloggers embraced it)'

例文では、be slow getting onto ...で、「〜をし始めるのがちょっと遅かった」という表現で使われていますね。

「＜時間•労力•お金などが＞〜に費やされる」。

発明家のJim MarggraffがThe New York Timesに語った言葉です。

ここでは、「作品は、過去の作品を作る時に費やされた労力がもとになって作られる」といったようなことが述べられています。

長い棒を使っていくつかの皿を同時に回し続けるトリックがありますが、その比喩として、「物事が休みなく運ぶように、絶えまずに働き続ける」という意味で使われます。

BBCのサイトから。Richard Blackというジャーナリストが 'COP15 Copenhagen climate summit: Day 5'という記事で、コペンハーゲンの気候サミットについて分析をしています。今日は、その記事へのコメントからの表現を紹介。

on the stickには、「有能な、油断ならない」という意味もありますが、例文では、on all those sticksとして、会議に参加している各国の有能な人たちとかけて使われています。

'It must be very difficult keeping the plates swivelling on all those sticks, staying on top of the story and keeping sane. You're doing a grand job Richard, keep it up. We all need your interpretation'

ちなみに、stay on top of the storyは、「ある話題の中心にいて、最新の情報をキャッチし続ける」というような意味。

ちなみに、insatiable demand for informationは、「情報を得ることへの飽くことを知らない要求」、churn out ...は「〜をどんどん作り上げる、生産する」という意味です。insatiableは発音注意。

iPhoneの機能を楽器のように使って、オーケストラ演奏を試みるミシガン大学の学生たちの話。

例文は、BBCの記事、'iPhone orchestra ready for debut'から。

'The motion sensors can also be used musically - an application can be programmed to sound different when the device is tilted, for example - but the desired effect is down to the individual designer.'

「〜を覆う、隠す、すっかりぬぐい去る」。

今読んでいる、'Talent is overrated:What really separates world-class performers from everybody else' by Geoff Colvinから。

ここでは、早い年齢で才を発揮する人たちは、往々にして、彼らが何を達成したかということのみがことさら強調され、それによって断念しなければならなかったことが、ないものとしてすっかり忘れ去られる、ということが書かれています。

'In these and other cases of high achievement at early ages, the brilliance of what has been achieved blots out any sight of what has been given up' (p. 178)

diversify out of

「～から外へ活動分野を広げる、～から外へ投資を拡大させる」。

leanはこの場合、「効率のいい」という意味の形容詞。become leaner and meanerで「コスト削減をして競争力を上げる」というイディオムとしてよく使われる。

raise outlook

「見通しを提案する」。

outlookという単語は知っていても、どんな動詞と相性がいいのかを知っていないと話にならない。

ということで、フランスの自動車会社プジョーが三菱自動車と提携を計画中、というCNNの記事、'Peugeot, Mitsubishi eye capital tie-up'から。

'Benefiting from a rebound in car sales, Peugeot earlier raised its full-year outlook.'
「自動車売り上げの立ち直りの恩恵を受け、プジョーは早々に年間見通しを提案した」

ちなみに、記事のタイトルで使われているeyeは、「〜を視野に入れる、期待する、注目する」という意味の動詞として使われている。

dream up

「〜を思いつく」。

世界で一番小さな図書館がイギリスの片田舎にあるという。それは、古くなった公衆電話ボックス。



例文は、boing boingのエントリー、'Disused call-box turned into world's smallest lending library'から。

'A resident dreamed up the idea when the village lost its phone box and mobile library in quick succession.'
「村がその公衆電話ボックスと稼働図書館を矢継ぎ早に失ったときに、ある住人がそのアイディアを思いついた」

ちなみに、in quick successionは、「矢継ぎ早に」という意味。

アメリカで使われるイディオムですが、...にはある事業や活動が入ります。

Donald Trumpの娘、Ivanka Trumpが始めた怪しいビジネス。

例文は、'Bad Ideas'というサイトのエントリー、'Ivanka Trump’s Bizarre Credit Crunch Food Business?'から。be roped intoと受け身で使われています。

’So air head heiress Ivanka Trump (yes, the Donald’s daughter) has apparently been roped in to a new *amazing* business deal - selling microwave dinners to cost-saving American office workers on the back of the credit crunch. I kid you not.’
